In this aptly named former monastery, guests experience what can only be described as a singular kind of liturgy, rooted in hospitality. Originally built as the palace of the Inca Amaru Qhata and later transformed into a monastery in the 16th century, the property retains the legacy of its diverse occupants and past roles. A three-century-old cedar tree offers refreshing, generous shade on arrival in the cloister, where guests can relax over tea, coffee, and canapés beneath the canopy. Inside, corridors lined with works from the Cusco School - religious paintings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries - lead to the San Antonio Abad Chapel, a Baroque masterpiece featuring intriguing architectural details amongst the gilding. In the guest rooms, monastic simplicity is enhanced by curated décor and frescoes that serve as a constant reminder of this special place’s myriad past lives. Finally, lunch at Oqre features marinated mountain trout, seasonal vegetables, and leche de tigre, offering a Nikkei interpretation of Peruvian cuisine in a setting that’s worlds apart from the usual dining room. A rich tableau where the moment itself becomes a work of art.
