Kisawa Sanctuary
Kisawa occupies a world of its own on Benguerra Island; three hundred hectares of dunes, forest and beach at the southern edge of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Nothing here feels imposed on the landscape, the Residences are scattered along the coast, each with its own stretch of sand and a view of the Indian Ocean, while thatched roofs, woven details and tactile walls bring the craftsmanship of Mozambique into the architecture. Local artisans worked alongside the team, even using sand from the island in the construction itself. The days are as open-ended as the landscape. You might head out with the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies to follow marine research, snorkel the house reefs, sail around the archipelago or simply spend the afternoon between the dunes and the sea. At Baracca, Mozambican cooking comes with the last light of the day; Garden Nursery is a rather different affair, with seafood, and vegetables and herbs picked from the permaculture garden. And when the heat gives way to evening, the Natural Wellness Centre offers a quieter side of Kisawa, with Ayurvedic-inspired treatments, yoga and meditation surrounded by the island’s vegetation.
