Kisawa Sanctuary
Mozambique
Benguerra is a dune that put out to sea. With Bazaruto and Magaruque, it once formed a long spit of sand attached to the mainland, which the sea eventually cut into islands. What remains are pale ridges the wind keeps moving and, inland, freshwater lakes of a dark blue, where crocodiles bask on the bank. Around it, the marine park protects coral reefs and the seagrass beds where dugongs graze. The dhows from Vilanculos cross the channel under sail, their patched canvas filled by the wind off the ocean.
