Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel made his fortune in trade with the Indies, where he earned the nickname ‘Maharaja’. He lived in the neighbouring Carthusian monastery in Saint-Estèphe, reserving Cos for wine, where he built Chinese pagodas on top of his wine cellars and died in 1853 in a room from which he could see their roofs. Today, La Maison d’Estournel occupies the monastery opposite the estate’s vineyards. Guests are welcomed at the kitchen counter, with a homemade flan and fresh herbal tea. In the evening, the Table de Partage shared dining table moves down to the vaulted cellar, where bottles of Chateau Cos d’Estournel are opened for the evening ahead.
