Known affectionately as the Pink Lady, the Mount Nelson has been part of Cape Town’s landscape for more than a hundred years. Its rosy façade sits beneath Table Mountain, surrounded by a remarkable garden where native trees grow alongside more exotic species. Beyond the palms and greenery, the house has the proportions and poise of an Edwardian country estate. The sense of history is strongest indoors. Original panelling runs through the corridors, alongside works by South African artists and photographs of former guests, among them Marlene Dietrich and John Lennon. The public rooms balance the formality of the architecture with comfortable seating and colours drawn from the surrounding landscape, while the gardens lead out towards a collection of pavilions and smaller buildings. The Planet Bar takes a rather different turn. Its celestial interior, filled with planets and stars, has the air of a private observatory. Elsewhere, the accommodation moves from neoclassical suites to more relaxed cottage-style spaces. Thebe Magugu brings a distinctly South African point of view to one of the newer suites, pairing bold artworks with fabrics whose patterns echo the landscape. At Amura, the Cape arrives at the table through its produce: smoked Cape salmon with buttermilk sauce, tuna tartare with cured egg yolk, raw scallops with citrus, and pineapple crème brûlée. The sea is never far away.
