In central Singapore, there are certain buildings that one never forgets: facades with verandas, arcades, and soaring ceilings designed to let the air circulate and the light stream in. Behind the Neo-Renaissance exterior of Raffles Singapore lies a Grand Lobby with an industrial-style glass roof; its soothing cream and beige tones provide a counterpoint to the dark wood, marble, and high ceilings found throughout, calling to mind a noble estate. The hotel was first opened in the late 19th century by the Sarkies brothers, and became a haven for passing adventurers like Kipling, Joseph Conrad, and Somerset Maugham, but it also served as a major stage for high society for decades afterwards. The Long Bar preserves echoes of this past, notably in its menu and through its famous Singapore Sling, created here in 1915. Nearby, in the Tiffin Room, timeless curries extend this narrative from table to table, blending Indian heritage, architecture, and tropical aromas.
