Flowered majolica tiles dress the lower façades of Emerald Hill, where Peranakan families built their terraced houses; in front of the door, a second, half-height door of wood, the pintu pagar, lets the air in and stops the eye. In the old town, the upper floor of each shophouse juts out over a covered walkway, already required by the first town plan. At Kampong Glam, the golden dome of the Sultan Mosque rests on a ring of bottle ends: worshippers who had no money to give brought them instead, so as to have a share in the work.
