Originally a country house, then a hunting lodge, and finally the residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and Maharani Gayatri Devi, the palace retains the welcoming atmosphere of a private family home. Passing through the gates and across the gardens reveals a true kaleidoscope of sights: beyond lawns where peacocks roam, long pink verandas sit alongside sandstone balustrades, sculptural domes, and carved marble jali screens, in a harmonious blend of Mughal and Rajput influences. At The Verandah, afternoons drift by in the cool shade, golden turmeric milk in hand. Come evening, the grandeur of the former banquet hall awaits at Suvarna, where silks, Italian chandeliers, and Renaissance-inspired frescoes mingle. Here, you can savour laal maas – a red chilli mutton curry – and, if the mood strikes, dal baati churma, a classic Rajasthani dish.
