Umaid Bhawan Palace

Stepping into this 1930s palace, guests are immediately struck by its sheer scale. It’s one of the last great palaces built in India, perched on top of Chittar Hill, to command a view over Jodhpur, stretching towards Mehrangarh Fort and the Blue City. Inside, Art Deco, Western classical styles, Rajput architecture, and Indian motifs converge, from the soaring domed lobby and galleries to the royal family’s private quarters (as the owners still live here). While Stefan Norblin’s frescoes offer a modernist take on Indian history, the suites open onto the surrounding landscape, featuring understated elegance and the very antiques that furnished the property when it was first built. Amidst hunting trophies and sports memorabilia at the Trophy Bar, one can easily imagine an afternoon spent in England. A journey within a journey.
