The Savoy

The Savoy was built in 1889 using D’Oyly Carte’s theatre fortune to accommodate audiences attending Gilbert and Sullivan operas at the neighbouring Savoy Theatre. Monet painted the Thames from the river-facing rooms, and the view remains just as it was in his paintings, stretching from Westminster to Canary Wharf. Once a month, archivist Susan Scott personally leads a tour of the historic areas, which ends at the American Bar, where the trolley is wheeled right up to the table, and Peach Melba, invented in these very kitchens, is still served.
