D'Angleterre
Copenhagen, Denmark
A cobbled ramp stands in for a staircase in Copenhagen's Round Tower: it winds around a hollow core to just below the observatory, so that horses could haul the astronomers' instruments to the top. The rest of the city follows suit: red brick, copper spires gone to verdigris, cycle lanes set apart from the road by a kerb. Further out, in Bispebjerg, Grundtvig's Church raises its yellow brick front like a set of organ pipes, and inside, vaults and pillars alike are of the same brick. On a bicycle, one raises a hand to signal a stop, and the whole line behind stops too.
