Playa Grande, Dominican Republic
The Atlantic, not the Caribbean, is what reaches this stretch of the Dominican coast: at Playa Grande, its breakers fall on a wide crescent of golden sand, beneath a cliff where coconut palms cling. At Río San Juan, the Gri-Gri lagoon takes its name from a tree along its banks. It is travelled by boat between the mangroves; at the far end, a cave open to the water belongs to the swallows.
