The water in the pools of the Alhambra comes down from the Darro by a channel the Nasrids dug and that is still kept up. The whole of Andalusia is a matter of channelled water. In Córdoba, the Mosque-Cathedral repeats its arches of red brick and white stone through a forest of columns; in Seville, every patio has its fountain and its orange tree. Around Jerez the soil is white, and holds the winter rain for the summer vines. In the Alpujarras, finally, whitewashed villages set their flat roofs of grey clay on terraces that water from the Sierra Nevada still irrigates.
