Santa Fe, United States
In Santa Fe, an ordinance requires the buildings of the centre to take the shapes and colour of the earth; even the car parks have rounded walls the colour of clay. All over New Mexico, pine beams jut from adobe walls, and in autumn strings of red chillies are hung from them. Georgia O'Keeffe painted the red and yellow cliffs of Ghost Ranch; far from there, the dunes of White Sands are made of gypsum, and stay cool underfoot in high summer. At Taos Pueblo, the mud and straw render is renewed by hand every year, or the walls would melt in the rain.
