Bishop's Lodge
Santa Fe, United States
Below the Sangre de Cristo mountains, named for the red they turn at sunset, Santa Fe takes the colour of the earth around it. The centre keeps the look of adobe even in its new buildings: rounded corners, flat roofs, ochre render, pine beams projecting from the walls. Canyon Road climbs towards the mountains between earthen walls and doors painted blue. At this altitude the air is dry and thin, and shadows have sharp edges. On Christmas Eve, paper bags weighted with sand, a candle in each, are set out along the low walls and on the roof terraces.
