Vermont hotels collection

In Proctor, a good share of the pavements are marble, cut from the quarry's offcuts. Vermont has three stones, and each has its town: in Barre, granite, carved by stonemasons from Italy; in the Poultney valley, a slate of green, purple or grey, laid on roofs in bands of colour. Covered bridges still span the rivers: the roof was there to protect the timber frame, not the travellers.
