Airelles Gordes, La Bastide
Gordes, France
Gordes is built straight onto its cliff, in the same stone, and from a distance the rock is hard to tell from the houses. The castle holds the summit; the cobbled calades drop steeply between walls of bare limestone. On the plateau, the bories, huts with neither frame nor binding, close their vaults with flat stones laid in corbels. At the bottom of a valley, the abbey of Sénanque roofs its buildings with the same slabs, and monks still live there. Across the garrigue, dry-stone walls run everywhere; they are rebuilt the way they were raised, stone by stone, without mortar.
