An ash tree planted in the Renaissance still shades the square named after it, at the entrance to the old town. Beyond the Porte du Peyra, an urn-shaped fountain runs in the middle of the square, among grey stone façades pressed within the old walls; above the roofs, the baous raise their limestone cliffs. In the cathedral, Carolingian stones carved with interlacing are set into the pillars. In the baptistery, Chagall laid a mosaic of Moses saved from the waters, beside a font cut from a single block.
