Grace Bay is guarded offshore by a coral reef that breaks the swell; the water reaches the sand without a wave. At the other end of Providenciales, Chalk Sound, an all but enclosed lagoon, spreads an opaque turquoise scattered with islets of grey rock. Close by, on Sapodilla Hill, sailors carved their names and their ships' names into the limestone while waiting for a departure or, shipwrecked, for a vessel willing to take them.
