Umaid Bhawan Palace
Jodhpur, India
Mehrangarh sets its red sandstone on a ridge of rhyolite, a volcanic rock that splits into columns, and the ramparts seem to carry the cliff on upwards. At its foot, the Rao Jodha park has cleared the slopes of mesquite from Mexico, whose roots drove deep into the rock, and given them back their desert plants. The cenotaph of Jaswant Thada is cut from marble thin enough for the sun to shine through. Lower down, the Toorji ka Jhalra steps down to the water in diamond-cut flights of rose sandstone; a queen had it dug, in the days when the maharajas' wives had charge of the water.
