The Imperial New Delhi
New Delhi, India
Jamun, neem, arjun, tamarind: in New Delhi, each avenue was given its own tree, planted in rows when the city was still only a plan. At the end of Kartavya Path, Lutyens's presidential palace sets red sandstone at the base, cream sandstone above, and crowns it all with a copper dome drawn from the Buddhist stupas. Behind the white colonnades of Connaught Place, the Agrasen ki Baoli stepwell sinks its stone steps below street level. In the Lodhi Gardens, the sultans' tombs serve as markers for the morning walkers, who circle them before the heat sets in.
