The Imperial New Delhi
New Delhi, India
Every dynasty wanted its own Delhi, and nearly always built it beside the one before, so that the city sets its capitals side by side. The Qutb Minar raises its shaft of red sandstone among the ruins of Mehrauli; Humayun's Tomb sets its white marble dome on a plinth of red stone. In the Lodhi Gardens, Delhiites walk at dawn between tombs of grey stone left open on the lawn. Lutyens's avenues, for their part, unroll their pink and cream sandstone up to the presidential palace. In winter the mist rises from the Yamuna, and the whole city smells of woodsmoke.
