The Oberoi Amarvilas
Agra, India
The marble of the Taj Mahal came from Rajasthan by bullock cart, across a plain that produced none of its own. At Agra it rests on the bank of the Yamuna, inlaid with carnelian and jasper by hands whose descendants still cut stone in the lanes nearby. Not far off, Fatehpur Sikri, carved from the red sandstone of its own ridge, keeps the empty courtyards of a capital Akbar left soon after building it. Lucknow still embroiders white muslin in shadow stitch, so fine that the pattern shows only against the light.
