Red sandstone for Akbar, white marble for Shah Jahan: at Agra Fort, the reigns can be told apart by their stone. Deposed by his son, Shah Jahan ended his days in a marble tower, from which one sees, beyond a bend in the Yamuna, the tomb he had raised for his wife. Upstream, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah had tried marble inlaid with hardstones before him, on the scale of a casket. Agra's workshops still cut petals of carnelian on a hand-driven wheel. On the far bank, the Mehtab Bagh gardens keep a pool in which the mausoleum used to be reflected, white on dark water.
