Taj Lake Palace
Udaipur, India
Udaipur is looked at twice: once in stone, once in the water. The City Palace falls in white marble into Lake Pichola, and the palace of Jag Mandir answers it from its island, guarded by stone elephants. The ghats step down to the water, where people come to bathe and pray at dawn. Around them, the Aravalli hills ring the city in a dry brown, and the gardens of the maharanas line up their pools and fountains. The city rises early, before the heat, and falls silent at noon. In the evening, the lake gives back to the palace the light it borrowed.
