The Oberoi Udaivilas

Udaipur, India

The Oberoi Udaivilas

In the distance, the twisted domes – ghummats and ghumtis – look like swirls of whipped cream. Perched on the shores of Lake Pichola, on the former hunting grounds of the Maharanas of Mewar, this neo-historicist complex offers a contemporary take on the opulence of the Maharajas. A succession of marble courtyards, gardens filled with sweet-scented roses, and small terraces overlooking the greenery, each shaded by a delicate, vintage-style parasol, creates a unique journey bridging past and present. This theme extends to the suites on every floor: immaculate white walls are accented with raspberry or carmine hues, an homage to the traditional sari. At Suryamahal, an exquisite dining room set in an octagonal space with a ceiling painted to depict the heavens, guests savour a menu inspired by ancient royal families. A truly timeless experience.
