Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel
Palermo, Italy
Giacomo Serpotta signed his stuccoes with a lizard, whose Sicilian name echoed his own, slipped in among the figures of his oratories. At Santa Cita, lime mixed with marble dust and polished passes itself off as stone: drawn-back curtains, children perched on cornices, the Battle of Lepanto in relief. In the Palatine Chapel, painters from the Fatimid world covered the wooden ceiling with honeycomb cells in which musicians and drinkers keep watch above the Byzantine mosaics. On Monte Pellegrino, the grotto of Saint Rosalia seeps without pause; metal gutters fixed to the rock gather a water held to be miraculous.
