Before the road, Marina Grande was joined to Anacapri by the Scala Fenicia, a stairway cut into the limestone, and whatever came by sea climbed the cliff on foot. Fresh water was scarce: the older houses round their limewashed roofs into vaults that lead the rain down to their cisterns. On Monte Tiberio, the brick walls of the Villa Jovis still hold at the edge of the drop. Off the coast, on the Faraglione di Fuori, lives a blue lizard found nowhere else on the island. It has never taken the boat.
