Hotel La Palma
Capri, Italy
Paved in majolica, the floor of San Michele, in Anacapri, is not to be walked on: a wooden gallery runs round it, and from there one sees Adam and Eve driven out of Eden among a unicorn, an elephant and a crocodile. On the point of Massullo, Curzio Malaparte set a house of red brick against the rock; a staircase shaped like an inverted pyramid climbs to the roof, a bare terrace above the water. Offshore, the Faraglioni raise their limestone. On the outer one lives a line of deep blue lizards, found nowhere else on the island.
