Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco, Italy
For bend after bend the oaks close over the road, and the village appears only at the last moment. The castle, once held by the Republic of Siena, is now no more than a tower and a few stretches of wall on the height. Below it, the small church of San Michele, with its bare stone front and double bell-gable, holds a fresco in three scenes by Pietro Lorenzetti, the last work attributed to him. All around, oaks, holm oaks and beeches cover nearly the whole estate; the Sangiovese for Brunello takes up only a small share of it. Of the name's two halves, the wood has prevailed.
