On Via dei Cappuccini, behind a railing, pink flamingos pace the lawn of a villa a few steps from Corso Venezia. The ground here repays attention: two strips of granite run through the cobbles, laid for the wheels of horse-drawn carriages. The Torre Velasca carries its upper floors cantilevered out, a Lombard keep cast in concrete; Sant'Ambrogio opens onto a brick atrium where the noise falls away. On several lines, the trams of the interwar years still run, with wooden benches and Liberty-style lamps.
