Aman Kyoto
Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto keeps its voice low. The wooden machiya of Gion close their lattices on gardens one will never see; the temples of Higashiyama rake their gravel each morning as though no one were meant to tread it. Along the Kamo river, the city sits on the banks to watch the herons go by. At Arashiyama, the bamboo grove makes the sound of rain without any falling. Moss, stone, the paper of the screens: everything here was chosen long ago and has not changed its mind. Spring brings the cherry trees, autumn the maples; in between, Kyoto keeps its doors closed and its calm.
