Hotel Esencia
Tulum, Mexico
Beneath Tulum, the limestone is pierced with galleries where rainwater makes its way to the sea. In those of Sac Actun, stalactites hang underwater: they formed in the open air during the ice ages, when the sea stood far lower. Above ground, the city the Maya called Zamá, the dawn, closes three sides with walls and leaves the last to the cliff; over one doorway, a stucco god dives head first. In the Sian Ka'an reserve, canals dug by the Maya cross the mangrove around Muyil, and one lets the current carry one along, in clear water.
