Izamal has painted its façades the same egg-yolk yellow, down to the arcades of the Franciscan convent set on the platform of a Maya pyramid. Mérida owes to henequen, an agave once twisted into ships' rope, the colonnaded, marble-clad mansions of the Paseo de Montejo; out in the country, the haciendas that stripped its fibre keep their brick chimneys and the rails along which mules pulled the carts. At Uxmal, façades of cut limestone repeat the mask of Chaac, the rain god, with his hooked nose. At Celestún, flamingos turn the estuary pink where fresh water meets the Gulf.
