Te Awanga hotels collection

Grey shingle rather than sand: the beach at Te Awanga is made of what the rivers bring down from the mountains, and every storm reworks it. In the distance, Cape Kidnappers closes Hawke Bay; it is reached at low tide from Clifton, beneath cliffs striped with strata, brown with river stones, pale grey with pumice. On the point, Australasian gannets nest. The young cross the Tasman to Australia and come back a few years later to find a mate.
