Hook hotels collection

Hook very nearly became a new town: the London County Council had drawn its plan down to the last neighbourhood, then gave it up before a stone was laid; all that remains is a book, much read by planners. The village has stayed brick, between heaths of heather and birch. To the south, the Basingstoke Canal runs past the octagonal flint keep of Odiham, from which King John is said to have set out to seal Magna Carta. With no towpath, the Greywell Tunnel was passed lying on one's back in the boat, pushing against the roof with the feet; since its collapse, it shelters only bats, which winter there in their thousands.
