Each age left its own way of cutting granite in the Seoul City Wall: rough, uneven blocks under the first Joseon kings, square and regular later on. Some bear the carved name of the district that built them, so that everyone knew whom to blame. The rampart runs from ridge to ridge around the old city, above the grey tiled roofs of Bukchon. In the garden of Changdeokgung, the pond of Buyongji is square like the earth, and a round island in it stands for the sky. On the first Sunday in May, at Jongmyo Shrine, the court orchestra still plays for the dead kings.
