Park Hotel Vitznau
Vitznau, Switzerland
The rack railway up the Rigi leaves Vitznau a few steps from the landing stage and takes on the slope as soon as the village is behind it. At the Obere Nas, the lake narrows opposite the Bürgenstock, between two spurs of grey limestone that already belong to the Alps. The village is built on that seam. Above it, the Rigi is made of another rock, laid bare by its reddish cliffs: river pebbles held in a natural cement, standing out like the heads of nails; hence the rock's name, Nagelfluh: nail rock.
