The Chedi Andermatt
Andermatt, Switzerland
The Rütli, a sloping meadow above Lake Uri, was bought by national subscription so that nothing would be built on it, then handed to the Confederation, which may not sell it. At the head of the lake, Altdorf keeps a bronze William Tell in its square, his son at his side. Higher up, the Reuss plunges into the Schöllenen gorge, between granite walls crossed by a single-arched stone bridge, overlooked by the one the road now takes. Out of a tunnel cut through the rock, the Urseren valley opens all at once, broad and bare, around Andermatt.
