137 Pillars House
Chiang Mai, Thailand
A square of moats still surrounds the old city of Chiang Mai. At its centre, the chedi of Wat Chedi Luang lost its spire to an earthquake, and the summit was never rebuilt: stucco nagas guard the truncated mass of brick. At the foot of Doi Suthep, the monks of Wat Umong meditated in vaulted galleries dug beneath a mound, deep in the forest. In the Wualai quarter, silversmiths have clad the ordination hall of Wat Sri Suphan in panels of silver and alloy beaten out by hammer.
