Turnberry lighthouse stands partly in the ditch of a castle of which only fragments of wall remain, level with the rocks; Robert the Bruce is thought to have been born there. Behind the dunes, the runways of a former airfield still cross the short turf of the links. Out at sea, Ailsa Craig raises its dome of granite.
