The obelisk on the Mall wears two whites: work stood still for years, and the marble for its resumption came from another quarry. A law here ties the height of buildings to the width of the street; the city stays low, and the dome of the Capitol can be seen from far off. Georgetown lines up its brick houses above the canal, and the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks step down in terraces towards a wooded valley. The White House itself is sandstone, limewashed from the start so that frost would not split the stone; the name came afterwards.
