The Hay-Adams
Washington D.C., United States
On O Street and P Street, in Georgetown, the rails of a vanished tramway still show between the granite setts; the current ran through a slot beneath the roadway, since Congress would have no wires above the streets. At the top of the hill, the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks step down the slope in terraces of brick and box. Across the Anacostia, Frederick Douglass settled at Cedar Hill, from which he could see the Capitol. The National Cathedral was raised in Indiana limestone, stone by stone, a Gothic carved by hand that took the better part of a century to reach its towers.
