Moyo Island, Indonesia
On Moyo, off the north-western coast of Sumbawa, Amanwana feels remote from the moment the journey begins: there is no road here, only a boat or private plane to carry you across. Then comes the island itself, with glass-fronted tents tucked among the trees, lanterns hanging from the branches and a stone jetty leading out to a beach bar above the turquoise water. It has all the ingredients of a rather beautiful idea of nowhere. Inside the suites, pale timber, rattan and natural fabrics soften the line between jungle and comfort. Some look towards the sea, others into the forest; terraces bring both views closer, with little more than the sound of leaves and water between you and the landscape. Life soon gravitates towards the beach. Lunch, dinner, a drink or two; there is nowhere else one particularly needs to be. And deeper in the jungle, the spa tent brings together Indonesian traditions and contemporary techniques, from Balinese massage to treatments made with local ingredients.
