In Punta Cana, Tortuga Bay is a place where Oscar de la Renta quite literally left his mark, in the form of 13 yellow villas nestled between the gardens and the sea, designed more like grand holiday homes than hotel rooms. The fashion designer favoured natural materials like mahogany, rattan, wicker, and coral stone, along with whites and greens, incorporating his own fabrics here and there alongside furniture crafted by Dominican artisans. At the Bamboo restaurant, this concept of unpretentious elegance continues with ornithological prints, sea-grass rugs, and French doors opening onto a terrace where guests enjoy a local breakfast: mangú (mashed plantains), eggs, fried cheese, and Dominican salami. Golf carts whisk guests to the beach, the 45-hole golf course, and the landscaped gardens, while just a short walk away lies the Ojos Indígenas Reserve, with trails leading to 12 freshwater lagoons.
