Hotel Sacher Vienna
Vienna, Austria
When Vienna pulled down its ramparts, it laid out the Ring in their place and lined it with buildings that each chose their own century: a parliament in the Greek manner, a Gothic city hall, a Renaissance university. Opposite the Hofburg, Adolf Loos answered with a façade clad in cipollino marble only at the bottom; above it, bare render, which caused a scandal. The Secession crowns its white cube with gilded laurel leaves. At the end of the tram line, the vines of Nussdorf reach the last houses. From January to Ash Wednesday, Vienna spends its nights at balls, in white tie, and is back at work on time.
