In October, the cranberry bogs around Plymouth are flooded: the berries float up and cover the water in unbroken red. The coast then curls into a hook, Cape Cod, with its dunes, scrub pines and salt marshes, as far as Provincetown. Offshore, Nantucket, once a whaling port, clads its houses in cedar shingles that the salt turns grey; Martha's Vineyard raises cliffs of ochre, grey and white clay at Aquinnah. Far from the sea, in the Berkshires, the Shakers of Hancock built a round stone barn, where the cows, facing the centre, all ate from the same mow of hay.
