Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc
Antibes, France
In the garden of the Villa Thuret, on the cape, trees from other continents have been put to the test since the Second Empire, to learn which will bear the climate. At the Château Grimaldi, above the old town, Picasso was given a room as a studio one autumn; short of canvas, he painted in Ripolin on panels of fibre cement. Across the harbour, Fort Carré raises its four pointed bastions on a spit of land. At the tip of the cape, the coastal path skirts limestone rocks under a sea wind that hardly ever drops; it is called Tire-Poil, the hair-puller.
