In Provençal, St Peter in Chains was San Peyre encadenat; the hamlet gathered round his church, down on the plain, took from it the name Saint-Canadet. The village itself came down in stages from the hill of La Quille, where an oppidum and later the castle of the archbishops of Aix held the height. Below, the Durance rolls its pebbles opposite Pertuis, and the Canal de Provence runs between the vines at the foot of the Trévaresse. Up on the hill, the deserted houses retain a few stone vaults; of the keep only a shaft remains, the one the locals call La Quille.
