Domaine des Etangs
Massignac, France
At Massignac the Charente is still a river of hedged farmland: rising close by, in the Haute-Vienne, it runs between hedgerows, meadows and outcrops of granite. Two reservoirs, Lavaud on the Charente and Mas Chaban on the Moulde, hold back the winter's water and release it to the river in summer. This is Occitan country, the Charente Limousine, where the village is called Massinhac. Towards Chassenon, in the Triassic, a meteorite shattered the bedrock; the Romans built their baths from that rock, broken and fused by the impact, knowing nothing of it.
